Item The Relationship of Clothing with Self -Image and Personal Identity of Different Clothing Style Personalities(College of Home Economics, University Of Peshawar., 2015) Bakht Shahida Gillani; Supervisor Dr. Irum SheikhThis study is conducted for the purpose of finding out relationship of clothing with self-image and personal identity among different clothing style personalities. Clothing is a reflection of our personality. There was great clothing variation among different clothing personalities. A sample of 150 non working, and 150 working women from Govt., semi Govt., and private colleges, schools, offices, and hospitals were selected for the study. The respondents were selected on the basis of their availability through convenient sampling technique. In the first phase scrutiny of participants was based upon the clothing checklist based on six different choices regarding their dresses and accessories. In the second phase, the respondents were investigated for finding the relationship of their clothing choices with their self-image and personal identity. Rosenberg self-esteem scale RSES and self constructed questionnaires were used. Classic, Dramatic, and Natural Style Personalities scored higher on both the scales than Romantic, Ingénue, and Gamin Style Personalities. To test the hypothesis, t-test was used that showed significance between Classic Style, Dramatic Style, and Natural Style Personalities (Group-I) and Romantic Style, Ingénue Style and Gamin Style Personalities (Group-II). It was found by this study that our clothing choices are directly related to personality traits and self-image. The changing impact of age and socioeconomic status on clothing among different Clothing Style Personalities was worthy of consideration in the study.Item The Islamia College Peshawar Building An Analysis of Their Architectural and Decorative Features(College of Home Economics, University Of Peshawar., 2016) Imrana Seemi; Supervisor Dr. Zakir Ullah JanPeshawar city is one of the oldest cities of the subcontinent, previously known as the queen city of South Asia possessing marvelous past with rich history and enthralling cultural traditions. Allah has gifted the region with beautiful lakes, rivers forest and mountains giving way to other areas through different passes. Among them the famous Khyber Pass has played a vital role as a gateway to the subcontinent for invading armies and trading caravans between Central Asia and South Asia since long time. Sub-Continent was invaded by several European invaders which resulted in colonization. This colonization of the Sub-Continent basically influenced the cultural life of the native people in all respect and had many positive and negative impacts on the Sub-Continent. Modern technology, communication systems and better living standards were introduced, but it also led to dependency on Britain and supremacy of the rulers. Along with other influences it affected the architectural style throughout the Sub-Continent. The British rulers added numerous types of buildings like bridges, post office, churches, memorials, hospital, residential and official buildings and educational institutions. Same types of structures were also erected in Peshawar.Item SIMULTANEOUS PIGMENT DYEING AND FUNCTIONAL FINISHING OF COTTON-POLYESTER BLENDED FABRICS(College of Home Economics, University Of Peshawar., 2015) Shabana Rafique; Supervisor Prof. Dr. Bashir AhmadItem ART EDUCATION A CONTRIBUTORY FACTOR IN ENHANCEMENT OF PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY(College of Home Economics, University Of Peshawar., 2014) Rabia Chishti; Supervisor Prof. Dr. Syed Farhana JehangirThis study provides a baseline analysis of the extent to which the elementary education system in Pakistan is capable of enhancing or inhibiting children’s creativity. The present study was designed to examine the impact of elementary visual art in enhancing problem solving ability of children. The primary aim was to determine the relationship between visual art and problem solving ability among students. The predictive relationship between these variables was studied among elementary school children and young college students. For this purpose, the study utilized a quantitative approach to measure the difference in problem solving ability between art students vs. non-art students. Further, the study examined the role of two visual art instructional pedagogies: student-centered and teacher centered to evaluate their impact on the two thinking types, i.e., convergent thinking and divergent thinking along with the problem solving performance of the participants. The research encompassed two interconnected studies. Study I was a retrospective study concentrating on the long term effects of elementary visual art at the age of young-adult. While study II was conducted in the present scenario of education being practiced at the elementary school level in Peshawar. The two studies were carried out in further two Phases. Phase I consisted of two stages: stage I dealt with item selection and try out of scales to see if the instruments were understandable by Pakistani sample, whereas Stage II dealt with the determination of validity and reliability estimates of all the instruments used in current research. The instruments finalized in Phase-I were administered in Phase II on two independent samples, i.e., 150 college students from the National College of Arts, Lahore and Rawalpindi and 180 students across the elementary schools of Peshawar, KP to verify the study hypotheses. The Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices, Wallach & Kogan’s Creative thinking Tests and Problem Solving Ability Test were administered to measure the participants’ convergent thinking, divergent thinking and problem solving ability respectivily.Item APPRAISAL OF FASTNESS AND TENSILE PROPERTIES OF COTTON FABRIC DYED WITH NATURAL COLOURANTS BY PAD-STEAM METHOD(College of Home Economics, University Of Peshawar., 2015) Shahnaz Parveen Khattak; Supervisor Prof. Dr. Bashir AhmadThis study was conducted to appraise the fastness properties of some natural dyes of plant origin on cotton fabric. Owing to the growing trend of going “green” throughout the world, a renewed international interest has developed in the dyeing of textiles with natural colourants. These dyes exhibit better biodegradability and are usually well compatible with the environment. They contain natural colouring matter which is generally non-allergic, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and non-hazardous to the user and environment. Common drawbacks of natural dyes are their non-uniform shades and poor to moderate colourfastness. In this research project, solvent extracted dyes from alkanet (Alkana tinctoria), cutch (Acacia catechu), madder (Rubia tinctorum) and ready to use dyes from marigold flower (Tegetes erecta L) and Turkey red (Rubia cordifolia) have been applied on cotton fabric through pad-steam dyeing procedure. To evaluate the possibility of increasing their colour fastness, various dyeing auxiliaries (mordants, UV absorbers, cationizing agents, crosslinkers, etc.) have been applied by pre-treatment and post-treatment techniques. Metallic mordants included aluminium sulphate, copper sulphate, ferric chloride, potassium dichromate and hydrated potassium aluminium sulphate or alum. Better fastness (wash, light, crocking), colour coordinates (lightness, chroma, hue and colour strength) as well as improvement in tensile strength was achieved with postmordanting of copper sulphate on most of these dyes. Pre-mordanting of potassium dichromate brutally damaged the tensile strength of the alkanet dyed sample. Cationization of cotton with quaternary ammonium compound (Albafix WFF) has improved the fastness properties, tensile strength as well as relative colour strength (K/S) of cotton dyed with alkanet, cutch and marigold flower dyes. Post-padding of reactive UV absorber based on oxalanilide (UV-SUN) and UV absorber Rayosan C (heterocyclic compound) greatly increased the light fastness of cotton fabric, dyed with these dyes. Similarly, post-treatment of soft polyurethane emulsion (Dicrylan) has enhanced the light and wash fastness as well as retained the tensile strength of natural dyed cotton. The use of crosslinkers could not bring further enhancement in the K/S value of cotton dyed with alkanet and generally, they yielded lighter shadItem Ancient Cermic Motifs Their Modification & Reapplication A Study of the Decorative Designs on Pottery of Gandi Umar Khan(College of Home Economics, University Of Peshawar., 2015) Zil-e-Huma Mujeeb; Supervisor Dr. Zakir Ullah JanThe site of Gandi Umar Khan is located 55 km west of Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan. Several researches have been conducted on the pottery of that region but the present research has specifically focused on the modification of motifs and color schemes of the pottery of Gandi Umar Khan. More than 800 designs complete or incomplete, found on the pottery has been categorized according to their motifs. Six categories are made to accommodate all type of motifs; these categories are geometrical, floral, faunal, anthropomorphic, miscellaneous, structural and plain. The main categories are further divided into sub categories for detailed analysis. The geometrical motifs are further divided into simple and complex designs. The simple geometrical design includes vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, circular, loop, dot and wavy pattern. The complex geometrical design includes mixed, intersecting circles, net, triangle, chevron and step pattern. The second category of floral design is further divided into simple floral, hatched floral and leave pattern. The third category of faunal motifs includes horn, bird, goat and fish scale styles. In the fifth category the anthropomorphic designs include human face and eye motif in few designs. There are some designs which are not included in any category so these miscellaneous designs are heart, radiating sun and basket weave motifs. Another very important category of designs are based on structural motifs. These designs are basically made during the process when the vessels are still moist, these designs are grouped according to their style e.g grooved, impressed, perforated, roughened, undulating, slurry and textured.Item Acquired Limb Amputation An Interrelationship of Familial-Social Support Self-Esteem and Psychological Adjustment(College of Home Economics, University Of Peshawar., 2015) Shaista Ali; Supervisor Prof. Dr. Syeda Kaniz Fatima HaiderThe present study was designed to examine the nature and severity of psychological pain and distress associated with limb loss and explore its psychosocial consequences. The primary aim of the study was to determine the predictive relationship between familial social support, self-esteem and psychological adjustment of amputees. The study further attempted to evaluate the role of various psychosocial and demographic factors in the process of successful adjustment to amputation. In order to answer the formulated research questions and test the study hypotheses Familial-Social Support Scale for Patients (Nousheen and Kamal 2001), Self-Esteem Scale (Rifai and Tarig, 1999) and Psychological Adjustment Scale (Sabir, 1999) were used. The data was gathered from the surgical and orthopedic wards of different government and private hospitals of district Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The findings of linear regression analyses revealed significant prediction of successful psychological adjustment dueto positive self-esteem and adequate familial social support. Result confirmed that support tends to increase an amputee’s ability to perceive positively the reality of this tragic incidence and also help them to cope with the stress and anxiety produced by limb loss. Moreover, familial-social support increases an amputee’s level of self-acceptance, self-competence and self-esteem which in turns helps them to adjust successfully to the terrible incidence of amputation. Analyses of variance and t-test analysis demonstrated significant differences in an amputee’s level of self-esteem and psychological adjustment on the bases of gender, age, educationalstatus, cause, time since amputation and ability to do iv normal routine tasks. The present study affirmed that one of the greatest difficulties for an individual experiencinglimb loss is not only to triumph over the physical pain of amputation surgery but also to overcome the psychological and social stigma associated with loss of limb. Amputees need assurances and support from family and community in order to overcometheir post amputation fears and doubts. It emphasizes that psychological intervention is very essential for the amputees to bring them out of their shell and make them adjust in society by letting go off their amputation trauma feelings. The current research suggested that an enrich and stimulating environment should be provided to these people in order to help them to adjust to their disability in a positive growth promoting way and become productive and contributing members ofthe society.
