Abstract
This study was carried out to evaluate the Ghazi Barotha Hydro Power Project (GBHPP) in Pakistan for the socioeconomic benefits vis a vis the adverse alterations that have arisen on the floodplains ecology of Indus river in the study area. The study attempted to find answer to the larger research question of “what adverse impacts have arisen on the floodplains ecology ofriver Indus in the study area due to diversion of waters into Power Channel of GBHPP and what mitigating measures should be adopted to ameliorate the situation? The research was operationalized through 13 variables to achieve the desired objectives of the study. The major research tools used for the study were questionnaires, interview method, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and personal observations for the primary data collection. Besides, the secondary data collection from various sources was also undertaken. The three stage sampling technique includes purposive sampling for the selection of study districts, followed by random sampling for the selection of villages and households. The analysis was done through the computer software; and other quantitative and qualitative techniques
