Abstract
Water, being the basic physiological necessity, is vital to all life on the earth. We use water not
only for drinking purposes but also for bathing, heating, agriculture, fishing, cooling and
industrial processes. In Pakistan water quality is deteriorating day by day due to increase in
population, and improper disposal of industrial waste water. Industries play a vital role in the
socio-economic developmentofan area. Industries also have some adverse impacts on the human
and physical environment in creating pollution problems due to mismanagement and lack ofpreplanning.
The untreated industrial effluents of Hayat Abad Industrial Estate (HIE) find their way
to fresh water bodies of NWFP. Due to adverse effects caused by water pollution, therefore it is
essential to give greater consideration to know the magnitude and strength of pollution in
industrial waste water.
The present study was designed to characterize industrial effluents from HIE, to investigate the
pollution load of these effluents and possible impacts on the surrounding area. Before collection
of samples, a comprehensive industrial and field survey ofthe entire stretch of the main effluent
drain up to the receiving water body (Shah Alam River) was conducted for the selection of
sample sites and to identify the source and extent of pollutants. To obtain information about the
degree of contamination caused by industrial effluents, samples were collected from forty sites.
These sample sites included the drains of individual industries in HIE, Combined drains, sub
drains, main effluent drain at various location, sewage and Nullah joining main effluent drain,
(Confluence points) ,Nullah and the receiving water bodies i.e. Shah Alam River at Nakoba
village and ultimately main Kabul River at camp Koroona (Akbarpura).To characterize pollution
load, all the samples were analyzed for nineteen (19) water quality parameters; (seven physical,
six chemical, one biological and five heavy metals). The analytical work was carried out in the
laboratory by using the standard methods for the examination of water and waste water. The
analyze parameter included flow rate, P", conductivity, temperature and Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
were detected on the spot, while further analytical work was done immediately in the laboratory.
