| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation is mainly composed of seven chapters. They are as follow: 1) Introduction, 2) Literature review, 3) Quantification of heavy metals in mining affected soil and their bioaccumulation in native plant species 4) Lead and cadmium in medicinal and fodder plants from mine impacted areas, Northern Pakistan 5) Heavy metals bioaccumulation in native plants in chromite impacted sites: A search for effective remediating plant species. 6) The effects of organic amendments on availability of heavy metal(loid)s in mine impacted soil and their phytoremediation by Penisitum americanum and Sorghum bicolor 7) Conclusions and Recommendations. The Chapter 1 dealt with general introduction, aims and objectives and justification of the study. Chapter 2 mainly focused on literature review reported by the environmental scientist’s from different parts of the world. Chapter 3 explained the physio-chemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), Soil organic matter (SOM) and also pollution quantification factor and the heavy metal concentration in soil and plant species collected from Shangla District, Mohmand and Malakand Agencies (Federally administered tribal areas) Northern Pakistan. This chapter chiefly focused on phytoremediation of the Chromite mines contaminated sites and selected the best hyperaccumulator native plant species for future prospects. Chapter 4 largely focused on potential toxic heavy metals such as Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) concentration in soil and medicinal and fodder plant species in the study area. This chapter further identified the potential risk associated with these toxic heavy metals in medicinal and fodder plant species. | |
